sudo mplayer byebye command line I use openoffice for my office stuff, exclusively amarok for music and exclusively mplayer for videos (obviously I don't listen to music/watch videos much right now since kubuntu is presently offline), opera + firefox for web stuff/IRC , and pidgin/gtalk as my primary instant messenger, depending which computer I'm on. gimp for anything pretty-related . wordpress for blog stuff. tinyfugue for MUD, heh. I'm not really into microsoft that much, sorry everyone who is..

I use Windows XP because it causes me less headaches since I never run into compatibility issues.

lol! I'm a bit of an open-source fan . I'm willing to live with non-compatibility issues if there exists a workaround of some sort, also most of the functionality I need is provided by opensource software so I'm covered... I'm hoping if it's open-source it'll be compatible eventually EDIT: Yes, I AM using Windows. Everything I just said is null because my kubuntu is offline for non-open-source-related reasons lol. </3. I do need internet...

Windows Vista is a horrible operating system.
Why do you think that?

I use Windows Vista 64 Ultimate because I wanna take advantage of my 4GB of RAM. I don't use any of the "fancy" eye candy features of vista.
I use mozilla firefox or google chrome for browsing, foobar2000 for music, and mplayer classic for videos, with the CCCP codec pack.

why not go linux? That'd be fine if you didn't mind having limited to no compatibility to common programs and could deal with using alternatives that might not be as useful. And having to manually install drivers for hardware, some hardware isn't even supported though.

I havent had to manually install any hardware at all on my regular computers. Everything autodetects. Your mileage may vary, but I doubt it with an eeepc. They are pretty standardized.

I want to share something with you: The three little sentences that will get you through life. Number 1: Cover for me. Number 2: Oh, good idea, Boss! Number 3: It was like that when I got here.

I use XP because it was less expensive to buy and presented less problems

Possibly, yes. I would advise checking sites like this if you wish to explore the alternates. note that most will be available to windows as well. http://www.linux.org/apps/http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Linux_software_equivalent_to_Windows_softwareUnfortunately, with an eeepc i dont know what your options are regarding software installs. But you could try stuff in windows for sure. Good luck with whatever you do!

I have Vista on all my 3 computers, i.e. my home PC, my laptop and my office PC (of my own company).
I have disabled UAC on all of them because I hate it. I hate being told that I'm not allowed to do things on my own computer.

I personally can't stand Windows Vista.
Windows XP may not be very customizable, but it is a pretty stable operating system. It's what I use.
