I just got the latest Lucid installed on my laptop. I love it. I had problems over the last few weeks with it so I just formatted the h/d and reinstalled. They have put a lot of good things on the OS now. I easily set up dual monitors - of course it defaults the opposite side to windows.

Yeah I have a couple of low spec towers with it on, and I also keep it on a USB drive - it is excellent for repairing or rescuing broken windows installations.

If you're going to be sharing files with windows machines you'll need samba or are you just setting up regular ftp?

It can be done with Lucid - I did it a couple of years ago when it was beta. However it is a messy solution. It depends on how functional you want the file server - for example do you want to be able to ping torrent files to it ect. To be honest these days the best solution for this kind of thing is a dedicated NAS, that way you can have all the functionality of a file server with no hassle and very little power usage.

We are storing lots of photos and now videos. The server has XP pro at the moment but is very slow, so I thought that ubuntu would be ideal for the OS. I played around yesterday and managed to get sharing working so that the windows network could see the files.

BY the sounds of it you are after a media server as well as file storage, so if you have some old hardware lying around, try FreeNAS. It would be the easiest solution really. Give it at least a gig of ram though f you are planning on streaming HD video from it. http://sourceforge.net/projects/freenas/

I've used Ubuntu a lot but switched to Windows 7 because it's faster. I want to switch to Linux again because it's free but can't find the right distro for me.

I've used a few different versions of linux, but I mainly stick to redhat because it simply is the best way to run a webserver. Which ones have you tried and what is it you want from it?

I used redhat years ago to make a file server running Informix. I prefer ubuntu as it has so many features. BTW I am having trouble reading USB devices on the network. Any ideas?
