Whats your definiton of insanity

The characture of a guy who is crazy is wrapped in a straight jacket wild looking eyes and lives in a padded cell.  But I think there are different forms.  I dont mind excentric (mild forms of insanity where you can still trust the person).  But even thoughts such as paranoias such is that person rejecting me and other social phobias can be in away a form of insanity.  Whats your definition of insanity

I actually get asked this question more often than you can possibly imagine.

I don't like the word itself, because really it doesn't mean anything - it is a legal generalization designed to imply something which isn’t necessarily true. You see it is a word which is designed to differentiate between the guilt or innocence of a particular action. It isn’t a word that has any real use medically.

Let’s look at the extreme for an example: murder. I quite often work with people who have committed murder and part of my job is to assess their mental state. Now 98% of people who commit murder are as “normal” as anyone else and more often than not drugs and/or alcohol are involved.  Of the remaining 2% you can link maybe 0.25% to their mental condition. So in short, the number of cases where murder is actually directly linked to s mental health condition is miniscule.

One of the conditions people seem to fear most is Schizophrenia, which is a devastating and truly awful condition for not only those who suffer from it, but also their families and friends. Schizophrenia affects approximately 1 in a hundred people in their lifetime, making it more common than AS. For a sufferer, Schizophrenia is incredibly frightening and confusing, and yes, some sufferers can become violent, but if your world suddenly made no sense and you had developed an absolute belief that the people who are supposed to be supporting you and looking after you are conspiring against you, I daresay you would too. These delusions can become so strong and so overwhelming that the sufferer may not even be able to orientate themselves in time and space.

I could give chapter and verse on various other conditions, but in short, Insanity just implies a lack of understanding of someone’s frame of mind. It is a bit like referring to science as magic.

Abusing drugs and alcohol like I did can put you in a pretty warp frame of mine as well.  I know I was bloody troppy
